The Multiculturalism Program at the Department of Canadian Heritage continues to work with the Metropolis Project Team and other partners to develop a seminar on the intersections of diversity. In preparation for this seminar nine literature reviews have been commissioned examining the intersections of race, religion, ethnicity and heritage languages (non-English, non-French) with each of the following identity markers: Aboriginal status, age, disability, gender, immigration, official languages, region, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Metropolis Events

Wollongong

The Metropolis Project and the Asia-Pacific Migration Research Network co-organized a migration seminar in Wollongong, Australia on February 28 and March 1. The session, involved representatives from both networks, featuring discussions on Immigrant Settlement Patterns: Is Urban Concentration Irreversible; Skilled Migration Movements: the New Locus of International Competition; Migration and Future Population Trends: Policy Responses; and Pressing Issues in Migration Policy: The Promise of International Collaboration. Seventh International Metropolis Conference

The Seventh International Metropolis Conference will take place in Oslo, Norway 9-13 September 2002. The overall theme will be "Togetherness in Difference: Citizenship and Belonging." Sub-themes will include: globalization and the politics of migration; empowerment and the effectiveness of citizenship; urban textures; and gender in migration. The Croatian Centre for Strategic Studies will host a Metropolis conference in the Spring of 2002 on the subject of diaspora considered from two points of view, that of the homeland and of the countries of destination. The Council of Europe has launched an on-line cultural portal (http://www.europa.eu.int/comm/culture/index_en.htm) The goal of the portal is to provide access and connections "whether it is a question of cultural activities (music, dance, heritage restoration, etc.) or Community action (cultural cooperation, funding for cultural facilities, international cooperation,etc)."

Institute for Research on Public Policy

The Institute for Research on Public Policy is an independent, national, non-profit organization. Its mission is to improve public policy in Canada by promoting and contributing to a policy process that is more broadly based, informed and effective.
