Bill C-11, The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act became law in Canada 1 November 2001. The Act and accompanying documentation can be found on-line at http://www.cic.gc.ca
Research based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) continues to explore areas of interest to Metropolis. Papers to date have included:

United Kingdom
The Home Office is presently engaged in two important consultations. The first concerns the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and the second, how to implement the European Community Article 13 Race and Employment Directives. United States
The International Center for Migration, Ethnicity and Citizenship is focused on enhancing the quality and breadth of basic and applied research pertaining to issues of migration, ethnicity and citizenship in the United States and abroad. The Centre has recently partnered with Metropolis to develop a comparative study of Toronto and New York. More information on this project can be obtained from Howard Duncan at howard.duncan@metropolis.net

Sixth International Metropolis Conference

The Sixth International Metropolis Conference took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 26-30 November 2001. It attracted 768 governmental, non-governmental and university based delegates from 44 countries. The plenary presentations and the summaries of the 61 workshops will be made available on-line as they are submitted. Wollongong

The Metropolis Project and the Asia-Pacific Migration Research Network will co-organize a migration seminar in Wollongong, Australia on February 28 and March 1. The session, which will involve representatives from both networks, will feature discussions on Immigrant Settlement Patterns: Is Urban Concentration Irreversible; Skilled Migration Movements: the New Locus of International Competition; Migration and Future Population Trends: Policy Responses; and Pressing Issues in Migration Policy: The Promise of International Collaboration. Seventh International Metropolis Conference

The Seventh International Metropolis Conference will take place in Oslo, Norway 9-13 September 2002. The overall theme will be "Togetherness in Difference: Citizenship and Belonging." Sub-themes will include: globalization and the politics of migration; empowerment and the effectiveness of citizenship; urban textures; and gender in migration. The call for workshop proposals is out. They are due no later than February 15, 2002. For more information check http://www.international.metropolis.net

Croatia

The Croatian Centre for Strategic Studies will host a Metropolis conference in the Spring of 2002 on the subject of diaspora considered from two points of view, that of the homeland and of the countries of destination. The issues will include economic, social, and political activities of diasporas and the policy interests that follow. The California Policy Research Center is a system-wide research and public service program charged with applying the extensive research expertise of the University of California System to the analysis, development and implementation of state policy and federal policy issues of statewide importance. The Inter-American Dialogue

In the fall of 1999, LGI Managing Multiethnic Communities Project and the Centre for European Migration and Ethnic Studies (CEMES) partnered to update and maintain the database of case studies on innovative practices in the field of community relations in multiethnic environments and local initiatives for conflict resolution. The result is a living database available on-line at http://lgi.osi.hu/ethnic/csdb The project continues to call for written case-files describing and analyzing such innovative practices. Authors of successful submissions receive 100$US for each case file that satisfies the requirements of the database.
