Belgium

At the request of the Council of Europe, the Migration Policy Group (MPG) has prepared a report on diversity in Europe. The report will guide the Council's work on immigrant and minority integration issues and assist the Council's 41 member states to design and implement diversity and cohesion policies. The report was prepared by Jan Niessen and has a preface by President Havel of the Czech Republic. It can be ordered in English and French from Mrs Maria Ochoa-Llido at the Council of Europe at Maria.Ochoa-Llido@coe.int

Canada

The Metropolis Project Team at Citizenship and Immigration Canada is involved in co-organizing two Metropolis Conversations in the coming month. The first, with the Department of Canadian Heritage will address the extent to which the Canadian diversity model attracts immigrants to Canada, and encourages them to stay after arrival. The second, with Human Resources Development Canada will examine labour market outcomes of immigrants in Canada.

These conversations are the third and fourth in a series designed to transfer knowledge among senior policymakers, practitioners and researchers. For more information on the Conversations please contact Katherine Pestieau at katherine.pestieau@9522apx.cina.cic.x400.gc.ca

Citizenship and Immigration Canada has launched a new website: the Refugee Resettlement Partners website (http://www.cic.gc.ca/ref-protection ) which provides information on refugee processing; links to other related sites; events and activities; and contacts.

The Netherlands

The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) at the University of Amsterdam has released its second five year research plan. Details of the plan can be found on the IMES website at http://www.pscw.uva.nl/imes

The latest newsletter from IMES on the UNESCO-MOST Project, Multicultural Policies and Modes of Citizenship in European Cities is now posted on both the IMES site and the UNESCO-MOST site (http://www.unesco.org/most ). New working papers should also be posted shortly.

Portugal

Metropolis Portugal continues efforts to strengthen the policy dialogue among politicians, researchers and civil actors on migrant matters in Portugal. In late July the Metropolis project leaders organized a roundtable with leading politicians from the parliament, the trade unions and government to debate the new immigration law just prior to its final debate in parliament.

The European Commission's Directorate General, Justice and Home Affairs, in conjunction with the Luso-American Development Foundation and the Metropolis Project, held a special seminar on migration in Lisbon on September 14 and 15. This meeting was part of the European Union's efforts to develop a common migration policy as mandated by the Treaty of Amsterdam.

A new publication in English on the migration situation in Portugal entitled "IS AN ETHCLASS EMERGING IN EUROPE? THE PORTUGUESE CASE" has been printed by the Luso American Foundation. It is written by Maria Baganha, Jose Marques and Graça Fonseca and can be requested by email to flad@individual.eunet.pt

United Kingdom

The Centre for European Migration and ethnic Studies (CEMES) has recently updated its website (http://www.cemes.org ). The site now contains:

  • A new directory of research institutes, centres and departments in 30 European countries.
  • Up-to-date information on the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Fifth International Metropolis Conference
(Vancouver November 13-17, 2000)

The virtual programme for the conference, including descriptions of the plenary sessions and the fifty-two thematic workshops, has been posted on the international Metropolis website. Registration is now available on-line. Space is limited so register now!

In addition, we are testing a new interactive element of the conference package – virtual discussions. We hope to stimulate discussions among participants in workshops prior to and following the workshops themselves. This will increase the focus of the workshops themselves and ensure that the networking aspects of the conference continue long after the event itself is over. To access the discussions, select the hotlink under each workshop in the virtual programme and register. Once registered, you can begin to engage in the discussions.

Web News

The International Metropolis website (www.international.metropolis.net) averaged close to 50,000 visitors per month for the first eight months of this year. As more content is added to this site we expect traffic to increase exponentially.

On the Canadian site of the Metropolis website network under "Policy and Research" the Political Participation Research Network web niche is almost operational. Those interested in joining the network will be able to register themselves, add to the virtual bibliography of recent work in the area and alert members of the network about upcoming events. For more information on this niche, please contact John Biles at john_biles@pch.gc.ca
