Description:
This workshop will examine federal/provincial and international employment equity policies, programs, and legislation from an analytical perspective. Within Canada and throughout the world, there exists a strong link between ethnic origin/race and barriers to employment. In light of this reality, it is essential that policy tools to address those barriers faced by immigrants and visible minority citizens be examined.
Representative experts from government, academia and non-governmental organizations will be invited to examine equal opportunity measures in terms of their implementation, scope, enforcement, limitations and impact. The broader socio-economic context within which these measures have been implemented will also be analyzed.
An examination of employment equity policies on both a national and an international scale will not only highlight best practices and lessons learned, but will also provide policy makers, practitioners, researchers and other interested parties with practical benchmarks against which to assess progress and change.
Workshop participants will be encouraged to engage in discussion surrounding these key issues. This session will be interactive with both panel sessions and open discussion. An expert moderator will moderate the discussion.
The value of this workshop lies in its ability to inform and educate policy makers, to sow the seeds for socially meaningful research practices, and to foster greater international collaboration towards common goals.
