Description:

Migrants are more and more a relevant feature of urban growth and one of the major agents for social, economic and spatial change of cities. This workshop will focus on three relevant domains related with the dynamics of the new cities of immigration i) new urban places; form, function and setting; ii) new forms of community participation; and iii) opening new paths in the market place and in entrepreneurship. The presentation of different case studies of new cities of immigration, such as Lisbon, Washington DC, Oporto, or Barcelona will enable the development of a discussion that enhances the comparative dimension. Besides formal paper presentations, policy makers and NGO members (namely from the ethnic minorities and migrants organizations) attending the workshop will be encouraged to make specific interventions on each of the above mentioned domains.

Bringing together policy makers, researchers, and NGO members will allow the exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge in order to identify key goals and best practices. This discussion will also contribute to define strategic recommendations to build inclusion policies, namely in the social and spatial domains.
