Description:

The workshop’s rationale is that new immigrant-receiving countries, like Italy, can learn from the experience of Canada, a country of immigrants with a tradition in settlement and integration within the framework of multiculturalism policy.

Country profiles of Canada and Italy will be presented, outlining similarities and differences in policies, systems and in the approach towards immigration, also linked to cultural and historical factors. Urbanization of migration and integration will be discussed within the contexts of Toronto and Rome, and the potential for co-operation will be explored. Presenters will describe the programs, human resources and instruments available to deal with settlement and integration of immigrants in Rome, and the role education plays in both countries. Drawing from the experience of Canadian settlement agencies and following the guidelines of the Best Settlement Practices: Settlement Services for Refugees and Immigrants in Canada published by the Canadian Council for Refugees (1998) suggestions for a pilot project will be provided. Finally, presenters will illustrate the mechanisms of this cooperation both from the policy and international viewpoints, i.e. co-operation between governments, NGOs and/or academics as well as sharing of human resources and financial support.
