Description:

Increasingly children and youth in pluralistic societies must negotiate multiple identities as a result of the culturally and/or racially diverse backgrounds of their parents. This additional layer of complexity impacts directly on the identity development and formation of these youth and, thus, has important implications for programs and policies targeted at these age groups. This workshop will provide a brief overview of intermarriage patterns and estimated numbers of multiple origin children and youth in several countries before examining in some detail the wide array of complex issues which they face. Gaps in the research and possibilities for comparative studies will also be identified. The session will conclude with a moderated discussion that will consider various policy implications of the existence of this rapidly growing population category for governments and NGOs.
