Description:

The Vancouver metropolitan area is Canada's second major urban centre for recent immigrants - persons who immigrated ("landed") after 1980. In 1996, there were 339,000 recent immigrants in Vancouver, 16 per cent of all recent immigrants living in Canada, accounting for more than one-half of all immigrants in Vancouver and one-fifth (19%) of the population of the city.

This workshop will include a tour of the city, and will bring together individuals working in the field of immigration: academics, federal, provincial and municipal government representatives, and individuals from service providing organizations. Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to: the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of recent immigrants in Vancouver, their social and labour market needs and experiences, their participation in the economy, the jobs they occupy and their income sources. Where appropriate, comparisons will be made with earlier immigrants and the native-born.
