Description:

This workshop will examine the role of the state in what has been identified as a transnational era with pervious national borders. As the intensity and scale of transnational practices increase, the state at times appears to recede, and at others, to assert itself with more strength, or to re-articulate in new ways. The state will be located at various scales, in relation to immigrant experiences of im/mobility. Case studies will analyze the role of the state in response to various transnational practices, including human smuggling, entrepreneurialism, refugee and asylum application, identity formation, and civic participation.
