Description:

Set in the context of concern for developing citizenship practices and engagement in a democracy, this workshop examines the nature and extent of citizenship practices and engagement among students, parents and educators. While becoming more cognizant of the power of schools to replicate powerful social situations, the adults involved in the process of forming active citizens are of equal interest to the students’ own processes of learning and of becoming. The following questions are addressed: What are citizenship practices? What is citizen engagement? How are citizenship practices and engagement to be defined, categorized and problematized? Are these the same and different for students, teachers, parents and adults in other life roles? How do these intersect, interact, transact and negotiate? What are the implications for socio-educational policies, programmes and pedagogies? An activity of the Citizenship Education Research Network, this four-hour workshop invites the participation of Canadian and international actors involved as practitioners and as researchers in these questions.
