Description:

The goal of this workshop is to examine the relationships of language and identity to growth, access and equity in multilingual societies. Diverse perspectives of learners, teachers, public education administrators, community based immigrant serving organizations (NGO's) and government organizations that develop and implement policy will be represented.

This workshop examines the relationships between official discourse and daily language practices in a variety of educational contexts involving mainstream and minority children, youth and teachers. Faculty and graduate students will post on the workshop chat group several papers focusing on researcher observations and youth, teacher and school administrator perceptions about daily language practices. Representatives of non-government and government organizations and researcher(s) with international perspectives will raise discussion questions that examine the implications of the research for policy and service provision. Workshop participants will collectively identify selected major issues in policy and practice.
