This panel will present the findings of a project (completed July 17,
2001) on the challenges facing approximately 250 immigrant youth in their
late teens and early twenties who currently reside in Hamilton, Ottawa,
or Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Youth were identified from five groups: those
deemed to be "at risk" in school; those employed in low-level
jobs that they felt offered them no opportunity for a satisfactory life;
those who arrived with education or credentials they feel are not recognized;
those who arrived without such education but old enough to enter the job
market; and those who are out of work and out of school. Data were gathered
from key informants, focus groups with the older youth, and individual
interviews with all other youth. A comparative analysis will be offered
based not only on differences in findings from the three cities but also
from among the five types of challenged youth, and from variations arising
by gender and ethnicity. Academics, service providers and policymakers
comment on the findings, and recommendations for future policies and practices
are identified from the testimony of youth and service providers. DURATION: one 90-minute
