WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
There is a strong need to monitor the development of ethnic discrimination
in and across countries. Countries report on ethnic discrimination to
a number of international bodies. The measurement and monitoring of ethnic
discrimination might not be fundamentally different from other areas.
But the monitoring and indicators that are used today seem to be neither
representative, nor give basis for describing trends, levels, and distributions.
They also seem to lack a good riskpopulation definition. Due to well-known reasons objective
measures of discrimination are difficult to obtain. What is needed are
indicators that are comparable enough to be the basis for international
comparisons. The workshop will cover two sessions. For the first session
examples and experience of discrimination monitoring on the part of NGOs,
policymakers and researchers representing different countries will be
made available 3 weeks before the conference. On the basis of this written
material the first session will sum up and discuss the state of the art.
The second session will discuss what are the most objective comparative
indicators of ethnic discrimination and how to proceed in order to co-ordinate
better the monitoring of ethnic discrimination between countries.
