WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Goal of workshop: Comparative analysis of data and registration methods,
exchange of views and experiences.
The following topics will be discussed:
· the experiences of different countries and the possible lessons
to be learnt from these;
· the political relevance of gathering statistics on ethnic minorities;
· the political fields of interest regarding the availability of
such statistics;
· categorization of persons of mixed origins;
· What to do if persons refuse self- identification and how to
define "ethnic minority group" and "majority" in this
respect?
· The extent to which registrations on objective criteria and self-
identification on subjective grounds are different and (in)comparable;
· The alternative models for registration currently available How are policy-makers, researchers
and NGO's involved in workshop: They will be able to participate in the
discussion.
Both speakers and participants will be drawn from various countries, which
will enable a cross-national comparison.
A speaker from the UK, where registration and ethnic monitoring is advanced,
as well as speakers from other countries, where ethnic registration is
not applied, will be invited.
The participants will be challenged to discuss the different possible
practices.
