WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Goal of workshop: To discuss voluntary repatriation policy in the context of international migration on the one hand and the social and economic needs of migrants on the other hand:
· exchange of views and experiences;
· exchange of information on voluntary repatriation schemes for people who have been granted asylum or who have been settled as former migrant workers or as citizens of former colonies;
· comparative analysis of data;
· exploring possibilities of network building and of ideas for new policies.

Policy relevance and topics for discussion - Getting information on the political initiatives to facilitate or to foster voluntary repatriation.
- Getting information on the existing measures offering facilities to people of ethnic minorities who wish
to settle in their countries of origin, but who do not have the information and means to do so.

How are policy-makers, researchers and NGO's involved in workshop: Participants are invited to summit papers with information on their activities in this field.

How will international comparisons be introduced into the discussion Participants are invited to comment orally on the submitted information papers and on the opening lectures of the organisers. During the workshop, there is sufficient time for an exchange of views and discussion of policy related issues. The voluntary repatriation schemes are to be compared on their pro's and con's and on their effectiveness. Information on reintegration programmes of returnees in their homeland is welcome.

Which mechanism are used to ensure discussion of best practices/policies Participants are invited to present orally or to highlight orally at least one example of their own experiences in this field. Scientists, officials of governmental and non governmental organisations of the member states of the European Union, Council of Europe, ILO and UN are invited to join the discussion with information on best practices and policies.
