Wimmer
Born 1962, studies in social
anthropology, sociology and sociology of mass communications at the University
of Zurich, 1992 PhD, 1994 habilitation in social anthropology at the University
of Zurich. Field research in Mexico and Iraq.
Positions held: Associate
professor (Privatdozent) for social anthropology at the University of Zurich
(1994 to 1999), Director of the Swiss Forum for Migrations Studies (1996 to
1999) and reader for the sociology of migration at the University of Neuchâtel
(1997 to 1999), since October 1999 Full
Professor and Director of the Department for Political and Cultural Change of
the Centre of Development Studies, University of Bonn.
Fellowships: 1998/1999
Heisenberg-Fellow of the German Research Community and Senior Associate Member
of St Antony's College (Oxford), 2000/2001 Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu
Berlin (Centre for Advanced Studies Berlin).

conflicts, nationalism and xenophobia, social movements, the political
significance of myths, migration, theory of social change. Research areas:

Andreas Wimmer, Professor und Direktor am Zentrum für
Entwicklungsforschung der Universität Bonn.
Geboren 1962, Studium der Ethnologie, Soziologie und Publizistik an der
Universität Zürich, 1989 Abschluss mit Lizentiat, 1992 Doktorat, 1994
Habilitation im Fachbereich Ethnologie mit einer Arbeit über den sozialen
Wandel in Mittelamerika. Von 1989 bis 1994 Assistent, ab 1994 Oberassistent am
Ethnologischen Seminar der Universität Zürich. Von 1997 bis 1999 Dozent für Migrationssoziologie an der
Universität Neuenburg, von 1996 bis 1999 Direktor des Schweizerischen Forums
für Migrationsstudien an der Universität Neuenburg, seit 1999 Professor und
Direktor der Abteilung Politischer und kultureller Wandel am Zentrum für
Entwicklungsforschung der Universität Bonn.
Fellowships: 1998/1999 Heisenberg-Stipendiat der Deutschen
Forschungsgemeinschaft und Senior Associate Member des St Antony's College
(Oxford), 2000/2001 Fellow am Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
