Workshop description: The aim of this workshop is to discuss Metropolis' past, current and future technological efforts to disseminate research findings from the point of view of its various stakeholders (policy-makers, NGOs and academics) and to ensure the appropriate dissemination of Metropolis’ knowledge.
Some of the questions the panel will address:
· What are the dissemination needs of each of the various stakeholders (e.g. what are they accessing now - is information via the Internet or do they mostly focus on paper reports? This question has to do with how the information is packaged);
· What tools have worked in the past and what haven't (e.g., is the virtual Library a success? are we getting media coverage? What innovative strategies have Metropolis participants used in the past?);
· How can we evaluate the success of our past dissemination efforts;
· What are the constraints felt by each group (e.g. time, money)?
Suggestions for improving current dissemination practices will be discussed. (This could include creating a communication's committee for Metropolis. what is the role of the web masters?).
A case study will also be presented. The case study will discuss the success of an innovative approach to disseminating research results undertaken by Metropolis' Journal of International Migration and Integration (JIMI). JIMI's unique approach involved the use of the Internet, included academics, community partners and policy-makers in an international discussion and utilized a tradition dissemination tool to publish the resulting discussion. It drew the attention of the media and many inquiries from the public.
A presentation will be made on the implication of the web to disseminate knowledge and avoid duplication of the work produced. Ex.
